Art as expression means that there is something inherently about the art which connects the viewer to the art itself. Art therefore expresses itself in a manner that is deeply personal, for it directs itself to the viewer so as to produce an emotional grounded response. The feeling that art expresses is conveyed to the viewer, so that there is something newly birthed by the one standing before the art. What has been expressed is given voice in a sense, through the colors and strokes of a painting for example. The artists starts with a blank canvas and ends with an expression from the self that is now outside the artists, which is independent and now embodies that expression in a manner which takes on a life of its own.
